No Python installation. No previous programming knowledge. Start with Claude, create your first Python program and run it directly inside this lesson.

Lesson Goal

We are going to start from absolute zero.

1. What Is Claude?

Claude is an artificial intelligence assistant created by Anthropic. You can talk to it in ordinary language and ask it to explain ideas, help you learn, or help you understand and write computer code.

Remember: Claude can sometimes make mistakes. Check important information, read the code it gives you, and always run and test that code. Never share passwords, OTPs, banking details, or private student information in an AI chat.

We can communicate with Claude using ordinary language.

For example, we can ask:

Explain Python to a complete beginner.

Or:

Give me five simple examples of what Python can be used for.

Or:

Write the simplest possible Python program.
Important idea: You do not need to know programming before you can begin asking Claude programming questions.

3. Your First Claude Prompt

Open Claude.

Type:

Hello Claude. I am learning programming for the first time. What is Python? Explain it using very simple language.

Read Claude's answer.

Then continue the same conversation:

What can I make using Python? Give me five very simple examples.

What Is a Prompt?

A prompt is simply an instruction, question or message that we give to an AI.

Teacher: Do we need a special programming language for talking to Claude?

Student: No.

Teacher: Correct. We can use normal language. The instruction we give Claude is called a prompt.

4. Better Prompts

Compare:

Explain Python.

with:

I have never programmed before. Explain Python as if this is my first programming lesson. Use simple English and one everyday example.

The second prompt gives Claude information about the learner.

This information is called context.

Lesson: Better context usually helps an AI produce a more useful answer.

5. What Is Programming?

Ask Claude:

I am a complete beginner. What is a computer program? Explain it in no more than five sentences.

The basic idea is simple.

A computer program is a set of instructions given to a computer.

For example:

Display Hello

In Python, we can express this instruction using:

print("Hello")

6. Ask Claude for Your First Program

Give Claude this prompt:

I have never programmed before. Write the smallest possible Python program that displays: Hello, World! Show only the program first.

Claude should produce something similar to:

print("Hello, World!")
Looking at code is not enough. We are now going to run it.

7. Run Python Here

This is the Learn With Champak online Python editor.

Type or paste:

print("Hello, World!")

Then press Run.

Learn With Champak Python Editor Open Full Screen ↗

Expected Output

Hello, World!
If you can see: Hello, World! you have successfully run your first Python program.

8. Understand print()

Return to Claude and ask:

Explain this Python program to a complete beginner: print("Hello, World!") Explain every part in simple language.

The most important command is:

print()

It tells Python to display something.

The text:

"Hello, World!"

is placed inside quotation marks because Python must understand that it is text.

9. Experiment

Change the program to:

print("Hello, Champak!")

Run it.

Now try:

print("I am learning Python.")

Several Lines

print("Hello!")
print("I am learning Python.")
print("I am learning with Claude.")

Introduce Yourself

print("Hello!")
print("My name is Champak.")
print("I am learning Python.")
print("This is my first program.")

Replace the name with your own name.

10. Ask Claude to Modify Your Program

Give Claude:

Here is my Python program: print("Hello!") print("My name is Champak.") print("I am learning Python.") print("This is my first program.") Change it so that it also displays: Welcome to Learn With Champak Explain what you changed.

Copy Claude's modified program into the editor and run it.

You have now used AI not only to generate code but also to modify existing code.

11. Make an Error Deliberately

Enter:

print("Hello, World!)

One quotation mark is missing.

Run the program.

Python should display an error.

Errors are normal. Every programmer makes errors. Learning to understand them is one of the most important programming skills.

Ask Claude for Help

I am a Python beginner. This program gives an error: print("Hello, World!) Do not simply fix it. First explain what is wrong. Then give me a hint. Finally show the corrected program.

The corrected version is:

print("Hello, World!")

Use Claude as a Tutor

Avoid simply asking:

Fix my code.

A better learning prompt is:

I am learning Python. Here is my code: [PASTE CODE] Here is my problem: [DESCRIBE PROBLEM] First explain what is wrong. Then give me a hint. Do not give me the complete solution unless I ask for it.
Use AI as a teacher and tutor, not merely as an answer machine.

12. Text and Numbers Are Different

Run:

print(100)

Then:

print(20 + 30)

Expected output:

50

Now run:

print("20 + 30")

Expected output:

20 + 30

Why?

Explain the difference between: print(20 + 30) and print("20 + 30") Explain it to someone in their first Python lesson.

13. Mini Challenge

Without asking Claude first, make Python display:

Learn With Champak
Claude AI Course
My First Python Program
Hello, World!

Try it yourself.

Show one possible solution
print("Learn With Champak")
print("Claude AI Course")
print("My First Python Program")
print("Hello, World!")

14. Practice

Exercise 1

Write a program that displays your name.

Exercise 2

Display:

I love Python
Exercise 3

Display three lines about yourself.

Exercise 4

Ask Python to calculate:

25 + 75
Exercise 5

Deliberately make an error.

Copy the error into Claude and ask Claude to explain it.

15. Let Claude Test You

Give Claude this prompt:

I have completed my first Python lesson. I know only: print() text inside quotation marks simple numbers Give me one very easy question. Do not give me the answer until I attempt it.

Answer Claude's question.

Then ask Claude for another one.

16. Quick Test

Answer from memory first. Open the answer panel only after completing all ten questions.

1. Who created Claude?
2. What is a prompt?
3. Which programming language are we learning?
4. What does print() do?
5. Why is "Hello" placed in quotation marks?
6. What will this display?
print(10 + 20)
7. What will this display?
print("10 + 20")
8. Where did we run our Python program?
9. Are programming errors unusual?
10. How should we use Claude when our program contains an error?
Show Answers

1. Anthropic

2. A question, message or instruction given to an AI.

3. Python

4. It displays output.

5. Because Python must know it is text.

6. 30

7. 10 + 20

8. Learn With Champak Online Python Editor.

9. No. Errors are a normal part of programming.

10. Ask Claude to explain the problem, provide a hint and then help understand the correction.

17. Homework

Create a program that displays:

****************************
      MY FIRST PROGRAM
****************************

My name is __________.
I am learning Python.
I am learning Claude AI.
I am learning with Champak.

Use only:

print()
Try it yourself first. If you get stuck, ask Claude for a hint rather than immediately asking for the full solution.

18. What Have We Learned?

We started without assuming any programming knowledge.

You now understand:

print("Hello, World!")
